Europe’s Health Systems Strain as Heatwave Breaks Records Across Continent
Over 135 million people face extreme temperatures as France, Italy, and Spain issue alerts; scientists link intensifying heat to human-caused climate change

A severe heatwave is intensifying across Europe, with weather agencies forecasting temperatures exceeding 35C for more than 135 million people. The United Kingdom recorded its hottest day of the year on Thursday, as west London reached 38.1C, surpassing the previous annual high of 38C set in June. The event coincides with a partial solar eclipse observed across the continent, where more than 90 per cent of the Sun was covered in many areas including France and the UK.
In Britain, the National Health Service is struggling to cope with the extreme conditions. The Royal College of Nursing reported that nurses have collapsed from heat exhaustion in hospitals lacking adequate cooling. Pharmacist Bailey Williamson described the conditions as unbearable, noting that patients in beds were struggling to breathe due to the heat. Hospitals have recorded an increase in heatstroke cases, with staff describing the situation as a stark indicator of worsening climate change impacts.
France Meteo recorded 38C in Paris, prompting heatwave alerts across much of the country. Similar extreme temperatures are forecast to affect approximately 29 million Italians, particularly along the west coast, in the Po Valley, and on the islands. Spain’s Aemet weather agency recorded 37C in the centre of the country, with large parts of the Iberian Peninsula, including some 25 million people, likely to be affected.
Europe is identified as the planet’s fastest-warming continent and is often ill-equipped to handle such extreme heat. A series of recent heatwaves and droughts have fuelled a summer of wildfires and have been linked to thousands of deaths. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these heatwaves to human-caused climate change.
The current wave of extreme temperatures highlights the growing pressure on public infrastructure and healthcare systems across the region. With multiple nations issuing alerts and health services reporting critical strain, the event underscores the challenges posed by rising global temperatures.
