ESPN’s 2026 NFL rankings: Rams top overall list as Dolphins sit at bottom

ESPN has released its annual positional group rankings for all 32 National Football League teams, providing a detailed assessment of roster strength across 10 key offensive and defensive units for the upcoming 2026 season. The report emphasises the importance of relative performance, grading each unit against the league’s 31 other teams to determine where specific rosters hold a competitive advantage or face significant deficiencies.
The Los Angeles Rams are ranked as the top overall team, a position attributed to their elite depth and personnel. The analysis highlights the presence of reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, alongside a formidable offensive line and a deep tight end room. The report suggests that the Rams’ balanced roster makes them strong contenders for a deep playoff run, potentially extending their presence in the Super Bowl.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Miami Dolphins are ranked last overall. The report notes that the Dolphins had the shakiest unit at half of the positions analysed, with particular concerns regarding their offensive line and quarterback situation. With new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and coach Jeff Hafley leading a full rebuild, the team’s competitiveness is heavily dependent on the development of their young talent and the emergence of starter Malik Willis.
The Dallas Cowboys are projected to make a strong playoff push, with the report citing improved defensive additions and a solid offensive line as key factors. Despite finishing last in defensive EPA and allowing a high number of points per game in 2025, the addition of players such as Rashan Gary and Dee Winters has significantly strengthened the unit. Other top-ranked units included the Houston Texans in the cornerback group, the Baltimore Ravens in the safety group, and the Denver Broncos in the offensive line group. The Seattle Seahawks were ranked first in the defensive tackle group, the New York Giants in the linebacker group, and the New York Jets in the tight end group. These rankings provide a structured overview of where each franchise stands relative to its peers as the 2026 season approaches.
