ESPN simulation puts Lions ahead of Chargers in Super Bowl LXI
ESPN’s 9,187th Football Power Index simulation imagines Detroit beating Los Angeles 32–31, while stressing the scenario is not an official prediction.
A single ESPN Football Power Index simulation has projected the Detroit Lions to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers 32–31 in Super Bowl LXI, with Jake Bates delivering a last-second field goal.
The scenario is one of 10,000 season simulations run by ESPN’s Football Power Index. ESPN said the account included creative licence and was not a prediction from ESPN Analytics.
In the simulated season, Detroit and Buffalo finish 12–5, while the Chargers finish 10–7. The Lions then defeat the Los Angeles Rams 20–17 in the NFC Championship, and the Chargers beat Buffalo 10–7 in the AFC Championship.
ESPN’s simulated Super Bowl begins with Detroit leading 14–0 after two Jahmyr Gibbs touchdowns. Los Angeles responds through Justin Herbert and Ladd McConkey before Cameron Dicker gives the Chargers a 31–30 lead with a 55-yard field goal and 90 seconds remaining.
The simulation has Jared Goff guide Detroit into field-goal range, with the Lions using Gibbs to run down Los Angeles’ time-outs. Bates then kicks a 42-yard field goal as time expires.
Projected contributors for Detroit include Goff, Gibbs, Amon-Ra St Brown and Aidan Hutchinson. The scenario also has Hutchinson winning Defensive Player of the Year, but ESPN makes clear that the records, playoff results and individual performances are hypothetical outputs rather than confirmed events.
