ESPN ranks Florida Gators transfer portal activity for 2026 season
New head coach Jon Sumrall inherits a reshaped roster as ESPN highlights the impact of incoming transfers and departing players.
ESPN has released its rankings of the most significant transfer portal additions and departures ahead of the 2026 college football season, placing the Florida Gators prominently in both categories. The analysis underscores a period of transition for the programme, which is now operating under the leadership of new head coach Jon Sumrall.
The Gators secured high-profile acquisitions, including Auburn transfer wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr, who was ranked No. 41 on ESPN’s list of top additions. Singleton, a former Freshman All-American who recorded 1,468 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns during his time at Georgia Tech, was described by Big 12 writer Max Olson as a dynamic player with excellent hands and scheme flexibility. Also entering the fold is Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo, who cracked the list at No. 88.
On the departure side, the programme lost former five-star prospect quarterback DJ Lagway to Baylor. Lagway was ranked No. 30 among outgoing players. ESPN noted that the move to Baylor, his father’s alma mater, addresses a major need at the quarterback position for the Bears, who are looking to replace senior starter Sawyer Robertson.
Wide receiver Eugene Wilson III also exited the programme, joining LSU. Ranked No. 81 among departures, Wilson was a top-five receiver in the 2023 recruiting class who had chosen Florida over Georgia, Alabama, and Texas A&M. His signing was previously highlighted as a major in-state recruiting win for former head coach Billy Napier, though injury-plagued seasons in 2024 and 2025 led to his exit.
The influx of new talent and the exit of Lagway open up competition for the starting quarterback role under new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. Scout Tom Luginbill noted that Philo played extremely well in relief of previous starter King, displaying efficiency and accuracy despite modest stats. The departures and arrivals signal a significant restructuring of the roster as the Gators prepare for the upcoming campaign.
