Institutional analysis of roster depth and statistical dominance as New York and San Antonio prepare for championship series

ESPN has published a comprehensive ranking of all 30 players eligible for the 2026 NBA Finals, a series pitting the New York Knicks against the San Antonio Spurs. The analysis, which reflects performance and availability during the 2025-26 regular season and postseason, identifies Victor Wembanyama and Jalen Brunson as the premier talents driving their teams to the championship stage. The Spurs, seeking their first title since 2014, face the Knicks, who have not won a championship since 1973.

Wembanyama leads the ranking, having established statistical dominance during the playoffs with 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. He tops the league in Player Efficiency Rating and Win Shares, matching the postseason output of legends such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Tim Duncan over runs of 10 or more games. Despite suffering a head injury in the first round and a flagrant elbow ejection in the second, the 22-year-old has maintained a plus-62 net rating with the Spurs while on the court against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Brunson is ranked second, credited with orchestrating the most dominant Eastern Conference playoff run since the current format began in 2003. His 35 playoff wins since 2022 rank second among players with at least one All-Star selection. The point guard has transformed the Knicks’ fortunes, leading them on a 12-2 run through the Eastern Conference playoffs after the franchise won just one series between 2001 and 2022.

Other key contributors feature prominently in the ranking. Julius Randle ranks second to Wembanyama in Player Efficiency and Win Shares among players with at least 10 playoff games, helping New York post a league-best 123.3 offensive rating. OG Anunoby has been instrumental in establishing the NBA’s top-ranked defence in the playoffs, despite missing two games with a hamstring injury. For San Antonio, Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, and Keldon Johnson are identified as vital complementary pieces, with Harper showing potential as a future All-Star.

The series marks the first Finals meeting between these two franchises since 1999, with the Spurs holding the historical advantage in that specific matchup. Game 1 is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The ranking also notes the limited impact of players such as Jeremy Sochan, who has been barely used by the Knicks since being acquired in February, raising questions about his early-career trajectory.
