ESPN Analysts Propose Vikings Trade for Colts’ Richardson
Seth Walder and Stephen Holder argue the move offers a strategic fit for both clubs, positioning Richardson as a developmental option behind Kyler Murray.

ESPN analyst Seth Walder has proposed a speculative trade sending Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson to the Minnesota Vikings, with the compensation package centred on a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. The suggestion follows reports that Richardson requested a trade from the Colts earlier this year, marking a significant shift in the quarterback landscape for both franchises.
The proposal positions Richardson as a developmental quarterback behind Kyler Murray, who is currently under a one-year contract with Minnesota. Walder argues that Richardson would benefit from the coaching philosophy of Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, known for developing mobile quarterbacks. This arrangement would allow the Vikings to assess Richardson’s potential without committing significant immediate assets, while providing Indianapolis with a mechanism to address Richardson’s request.
ESPN reporter Stephen Holder has endorsed the scenario, describing it as a viable win-win for both clubs. Holder notes that the Vikings’ fifth-round pick is likely to be selected earlier than comparable offers from other teams, such as Detroit or Green Bay, giving the proposal a competitive edge. He emphasises that the deal would allow Colts general manager Chris Ballard to accommodate Richardson’s wishes by pairing him with a qualified quarterback developer.
Richardson’s tenure in Indianapolis has been marked by injury struggles and inconsistent performance, leading to him losing the starting job to Daniel Jones last season. The former top-five draft pick requested a trade in February, and while he has attended voluntary offseason workouts, his future with the Colts appears uncertain. The Colts have indicated a desire to facilitate his departure, making a trade a logical outcome before the 2026 season.
The potential acquisition could trigger further roster adjustments in Minnesota. Holder suggests that adding Richardson to the quarterback room, which already includes Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, might create a domino effect, potentially leading to a trade for McCarthy. Richardson’s contract expires in 2027, offering the Vikings flexibility to either develop him as a long-term starter or move on depending on his progress behind Murray.
No formal agreement has been reached, and the proposal remains a hypothetical analysis rather than an active negotiation. The trade highlights the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Richardson’s career trajectory and the Vikings’ strategic planning for their quarterback position in the coming years.
