ESPN analyst Louis Riddick has identified Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels as one of the top five quarterbacks in the National Football League, projecting a return to his 2024 performance levels for the 2026 season. Riddick, a former NFL safety and veteran scout, argued that the team’s difficulties in the previous campaign were driven by widespread injuries rather than a deterioration in the quarterback’s capabilities.
Daniels secured Offensive Rookie of the Year honours in 2024, guiding the Commanders to their first NFC Championship appearance in three decades. However, the subsequent season was characterised by significant setbacks, which Riddick described as a "massive flop" for the organisation. He emphasised that Daniels’ absence from the field was due to "bad breaks" and physical setbacks unrelated to his size, rather than a loss of skill or form.
Riddick described the quarterback as "brilliant," "fast," and "electric," noting his intelligence and leadership qualities. He stated that he expects Daniels to "remind everybody of who he is and who he was in 2024," rejecting the notion that the player had taken a step back. The analyst highlighted that Daniels’ ability to pass and elevate his teammates remains intact despite the previous year’s challenges.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Riddick pointed to several structural factors that could support a resurgence. He identified the acquisition of wide receiver Stefon Diggs as a significant move, alongside the necessity of keeping Terry McLaurin healthy and avoiding contract-related distractions. The addition of rookie Antonio Williams, drafted from Clemson, was also cited as a crucial asset for the offensive line and running back corps.
Riddick’s assessment carries weight given his extensive background in football operations and player personnel. As one of the few analysts voicing strong support for Daniels’ elite status this summer, his evaluation suggests that the Commanders’ primary task is ensuring player availability and roster security to replicate the success of the previous rookie season.
