The report argues that while the US possesses a deep pool of elite physical talent, the specific biomechanical requirements of soccer—particularly for creative roles—render the direct translation of American gridiron or basketball skills ineffective for sustained international success.

The article posits that soccer rewards a low centre of gravity and short-area quickness, traits exemplified by Lionel Messi, who is listed at 5-foot-7 and 148 pounds. In contrast, the typical American elite athlete possesses the height and mass associated with NFL or NBA stars, attributes that are often disqualifying in basketball or football but advantageous in soccer. The analysis notes that while Messi’s smaller frame facilitates his ability to deke defenders and maintain balance, it is the exception rather than the rule for American athletic development.

Data from Europe’s top five leagues reveals a distinct divide in player stature. Creative positions, such as midfielders and wingers, average 5-foot-11 and approximately 160 pounds, whereas defensive and goal-scoring roles, including centre backs and strikers, average 6-foot-2 and over 183 pounds.
