Equipment delay leaves MLB umpires in personal attire at Target Field
A logistical failure at Target Field resulted in three of the four umpires wearing non-standard trousers during the Milwaukee Brewers’ win over the Minnesota Twins on May 15.

The Milwaukee Brewers secured a narrow 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on May 15, but the contest was marked by an unusual logistical disruption before the first pitch. A trunk of essential equipment failed to arrive at the stadium on time, leaving the officiating crew without their standard uniform trousers for the initial stages of the game.
The umpiring team consisted of first-base umpire Stu Scheurwater, second-base umpire Junior Valentine, and third-base umpire Jordan Baker. Without access to the delayed trunk, these three officials began the match wearing their personal attire. Home-plate umpire Rob Drake, however, had standard equipment available on site and wore the correct uniform throughout the contest.
The situation drew immediate attention from players and management, with the incident highlighted on social media by MLB reporter Dan Hayes. Brewers manager Pat Murphy addressed the visual discrepancy with humour, stating, "It was ugly early," and comparing the appearance to his team’s offensive performance. Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan speculated that Scheurwater was wearing trousers with a Lululemon fit, while Brewers second baseman Brice Turang suggested the officials should adopt a "less rigid look" more often.
Despite the sartorial irregularity, the officiating crew remained central to the game’s outcome. Third-base umpire Jordan Baker made a pivotal obstruction call in the eighth inning that allowed the Brewers to tie the game at 2-2. One batter later, Jake Bauers hit a double to put Milwaukee ahead, securing the 3-2 win.
The umpires were able to change into their official gear later in the game, though the specific timing of the swap was not detailed. Following the match, the officiating crew declined to comment to a pool reporter regarding either the uniform issue or Baker’s critical call. The incident, originally reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, underscores the operational dependencies that underpin professional sports governance.
