England pace concerns mount as Archer and Carse sidelined by IPL commitments
England head coach Brendon McCullum confirms Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse are unavailable for the second Test, forcing a squad reshuffle and highlighting the logistical challenges of modern multi-format cricket.

England’s preparations for the second Test against New Zealand have been complicated by the unavailability of two key fast bowlers, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, due to their ongoing commitments in the Indian Premier League. The situation underscores the growing friction between the financial imperatives of franchise cricket and the logistical demands of the international Test schedule.
Archer, 31, remains in Barbados and will not return to England until after the first Test at Lord’s, which begins on 17 June. The pace bowler was part of the Rajasthan Royals squad that was eliminated in the IPL qualifier on Friday. England’s management initially listed Archer as unavailable for the first Test following a "long six months on the road," a designation that now extends to the second Test as well.
England head coach Brendon McCullum indicated that Archer requires further assessment before a decision can be made regarding his availability for the second or third Tests. "Jofra we need to assess," McCullum told BBC Sport. "He's having a little bit of a break at the moment... When we see him we'll work out where he sits and if he's available for the second Test. If not, we'll look at the third Test."
Compounding the bowling concerns, fellow fast bowler Brydon Carse is also ruled out of the New Zealand series. Carse suffered a broken wrist during the IPL and, despite attending England’s pre-series training camp at Loughborough, is not expected to feature in the upcoming matches. His absence removes another option from the pace attack as England seeks to rebuild following a difficult Ashes campaign.
In response to these absences, England have reduced their initial 15-man squad to 12 players for the first Test. The selection committee has recalled Ollie Robinson after a two-year absence and named Shoaib Bashir as the first-choice spinner, replacing Rehan Ahmed. Uncapped seamer Sonny Baker has also been included, providing additional depth to the attack. While Archer’s contract with Rajasthan is valued at approximately £1.18m, recent IPL rule changes impose a two-year ban on players who withdraw for non-medical reasons, limiting the flexibility of player movement between formats.
