England and Ghana are scheduled to meet at Gillette Stadium in Houston on Tuesday at 20:00 GMT, a fixture that will determine which team advances directly to the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both nations enter the contest with three points from their opening Group L matches, having defeated Croatia 4-2 and Panama 1-0 respectively. The winner secures top spot in the group, while the loser faces a precarious path to the next phase.

Statistical modelling from Opta’s supercomputer assigns England a 78.8% probability of victory, compared to 7.9% for Ghana and 13.3% for a draw. England are currently ranked fourth in the supercomputer’s overall predictions for lifting the trophy, with a 10.39% chance, trailing Argentina, France, and Spain. Ghana, meanwhile, are targeting their first knockout stage appearance since their quarterfinal run in 2010.

England coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed that midfielder Bukayo Saka is fit and pain-free following an Achilles tendon issue. Saka participated in the highest level of training over the previous two days, with Tuchel stating the player is ready to contribute, though the starting lineup decision remains pending. The Three Lions’ attacking prowess was on display against Croatia, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford scoring, although questions regarding defensive stability have been raised by the 4-2 scoreline.

Ghana’s preparations have been marked by administrative and legal complexities surrounding midfielder Thomas Partey. Partey missed the opening match against Panama due to visa issues preventing travel to Canada. He also faces allegations of rape and sexual assault in the United Kingdom, which he has denied. Authorities have now cleared Partey to travel to the United States for the Houston fixture. Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz indicated that a late decision would be made regarding goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who was injured during the win over Panama.

Queiroz emphasised that his squad is fully motivated by the challenge of facing a title favourite. He noted that the team is aware of England’s reputation but is focused on representing Ghana’s 33 million citizens. The match marks the first competitive meeting between the two nations at a World Cup, though they drew 1-1 in a friendly in March 2011. England remain unbeaten in eight previous World Cup matches against African opposition.
