El Salvador’s electoral tribunal has set the presidential election for 28 February 2027, opening the way for President Nayib Bukele to seek another term. His Nuevas Ideas party has nominated him.

Constitutional changes abolished presidential term limits and extended presidential terms from five years to six. Bukele, in power since 2019, could remain president until 2033 if re-elected.

Maytee Iraheta, a former congresswoman with ARENA, and Rafael Aguirre, a union leader with the FMLN, have announced plans to run. The source does not establish whether either has formally registered a candidacy.

Bukele’s crackdown has sharply reduced gang violence, while NGOs allege widespread human rights abuses, including torture, and say they could constitute crimes against humanity. Bukele rejects the allegations.
