EDG moves C++ front end to open-source stewardship
The C++ Alliance is set to host and maintain the code, with a committee chaired by John Spicer overseeing development and funding.
EDG says the source code for its C++ front end is going public under The C++ Alliance, which will provide the project’s nonprofit home and maintain it. The announcement describes the release as taking place on 30 September 2026; it does not independently confirm completion.
The code is to be hosted at github.com/edgcpp, where users can submit bug fixes and features as pull requests. Experienced EDG developers will initially review contributions before merging them. The Alliance says its maintenance changes will be published immediately.
Larger features may be funded collectively by organisations, with funded work released to everyone at the same time. The project will use one public codebase, according to the announcement.
A Fiscal Sponsorship Committee chaired by John Spicer will oversee contributions, maintenance and funded features. It is expected to include volunteers from the EDG user community, and the Alliance is inviting feedback on membership and development priorities.
EDG says the engine, implemented standards and user contact will remain the same, while stewardship, funding and code hosting change. The sponsorship agreement is described as ready to sign, but the announcement does not confirm it has been executed.
