Ed Sheeran Philadelphia concert to proceed amid Gaza backlash
The scheduled performance follows Macklemore’s removal from Sheeran’s US tour and the withdrawal of three opening acts.
Ed Sheeran is scheduled to perform at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday amid backlash over the removal of rapper Macklemore from his United States tour.
Macklemore was dropped after saying “free Palestine” during a performance in New Jersey on 5 September. Al Jazeera reported that Robert Kraft, whose company owns a stadium where Sheeran was scheduled to perform, pushed for the decision.
Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe have since withdrawn from scheduled opening slots. Sheeran may therefore perform without opening acts, although the report does not confirm whether replacement performers will be announced.
Sheeran has said he was “not complicit” and denied responsibility for Macklemore’s removal. Palestinian advocacy groups have accused him of helping suppress criticism of Israel and called for a boycott of his world tour.
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel said it was extending its boycott call to Sheeran’s upcoming Latin American dates and an as-yet-unannounced European leg. A pro-Palestinian rally is planned near the Philadelphia venue before the concert.
Artists in Gaza have also painted a mural supporting Macklemore in the rubble of Gaza City. The mural reflects the wider political backlash surrounding the tour as Palestinians remain displaced and face shortages of basic services despite a ceasefire agreement.
