Ed Sheeran has addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his tour, telling concert-goers in Philadelphia that he had been drawn into a debate over free speech and a complex political issue.
“I never wanted to be an activist musician,” Sheeran said at the stripped-back show at Lincoln Financial Field, according to the BBC. He said his concerts had always been a safe space for everyone and that he remained committed to his fans.
Macklemore was removed from the tour following remarks characterised by the source as pro-Palestinian. Sheeran has said the decision was made by promoters, not by him. He also acknowledged making “mistakes” during difficult decisions.
Several musicians withdrew from the event, leaving Sheeran to perform without opening acts and delaying the start. Empty seats were visible when the concert began, while protesters gathered near a nearby transport stop.
The BBC reported that ticket prices and sales for the remaining United States dates had declined. Some ticket prices for the Philadelphia show reportedly fell to $32, while fans said refunds were available in some cases. Ticketmaster and Messina Touring Group had not confirmed reimbursements.
