DR Congo football squad arrives in US after Ebola-linked quarantine
The Democratic Republic of Congo national team has entered the United States following mandatory health restrictions, setting up for their first tournament appearance in over five decades.

The Democratic Republic of Congo national football team arrived in the United States on Thursday, concluding a mandatory 21-day quarantine period imposed by US authorities due to an Ebola outbreak in the country. Head coach Sebastien Desabre stated that the squad aims to deliver a strong performance at the World Cup to lift the spirits of supporters back home.
The team, making their first appearance at the tournament since 1974 when they competed under the name Zaire, relocated their pre-tournament preparations to Belgium after cancelling a domestic training camp. Desabre confirmed that the squad adapted to the disrupted schedule by playing two tough friendlies during their time in Europe before departing for the US from Paris.
Desabre, 49, acknowledged the patience required by fans who have waited decades to see the nation qualify for the finals again. He emphasised that the team had focused on their adaptation to the situation and expressed hope that their efforts would bring pleasure to compatriots affected by recent health challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The squad will be based in Houston for the duration of the tournament. Their campaign begins with a Group K match against Portugal on June 17. The team is then scheduled to travel to Guadalajara, Mexico, to face Colombia on June 23, followed by a fixture against Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 28.
The entry into the United States followed strict health protocols, with US authorities insisting on the quarantine period before permitting the team to enter US soil. The move underscores the logistical and health complexities faced by the national side as they prepare for their historic return to the World Cup stage.
