Max Dowman made his first start for the Arsenal U21s on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes as the team recovered from an early deficit to secure a draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League 2 season opener.
The midfielder, who had been included in the first-team squad for the previous day’s victory over Coventry City but did not feature, emerged as the primary creative force for the Gunners in the opening half. He generated several opportunities for his teammates, including an early chance for Archie Stevens and further openings for Evan Mooney and Ife Ibrahim.
Despite Arsenal’s early pressure, Crystal Palace struck shortly after the break. Zavier Gozo converted in the 50th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, putting the hosts on the back foot.
Dowman’s influence proved decisive in the second half as he orchestrated the equaliser. After bringing down a long ball with an expert touch, he slid a through ball into the path of Andre Harriman-Annous, who chipped the ball home to level the score 14 minutes after the break.
Arsenal continued to push for a winner, with Dowman registering one of the best remaining chances of the match. His powerful effort from distance was tipped over the crossbar, leaving the teams to share the points.
The result provides a solid foundation for the young squad, with Dowman now having 90 minutes of competitive match action under his belt as he continues to push for first-team minutes in the coming weeks.
