Dover protest exposes pressure on port security and traffic management
A masked anti-immigration demonstration blocked the A20, prompting ministerial condemnation and renewed questions about police preparedness around critical infrastructure.
Dozens of masked, black-clad protesters blocked Dover’s A20 on Saturday, halting traffic to and from the Port of Dover and creating delays of up to 45 minutes. National Highways reported congestion stretching for four miles.
The Port of Dover described the incident as a public order incident. Kent police attended and engaged with protesters, who dispersed by lunchtime. No arrests were reported.
Responsibility appeared to have been claimed by Patriot Platform, described by The Guardian as an anti-immigration group with links to the far right. Videos showed demonstrators linking arms across the road and chanting slogans including “stop the boats” and “England till I die”.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds condemned both the demonstration and its impact on local residents. He said peaceful protest was an essential part of British life, but criticised the masked blockade as “dressing up in costumes” and disrupting people’s lives. Reynolds said police had handled the incident well overall.
Mike Tapp, the Labour MP for Dover and Deal, questioned whether police had received adequate advance warning and called for stronger preparations if Dover is targeted again. He said the port was critical national infrastructure, handling around one-third of UK goods trade with the European Union.
The government said the right to peaceful protest remained fundamental to democracy, while condemning the behaviour in Dover and the disruption to travel.
