Dorrington halts Pogon Szczecin move as Tottenham reassess defensive options
The 21-year-old centre-back withdraws from agreed terms with the Polish club to pursue a Championship or League One transfer.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Alfie Dorrington has withdrawn from a proposed permanent transfer to Polish Ekstraklasa club Pogon Szczecin at the last minute. The 21-year-old academy graduate, who had already agreed on a transfer fee and was scheduled to undergo a medical, informed both clubs that he no longer intends to complete the move. Instead, he has opted to remain in England to pursue a domestic transfer, with his representatives actively seeking opportunities within the English Football League (EFL).
Dorrington’s decision comes as Tottenham faces defensive congestion under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The club had been open to a permanent departure to help the young centre-back establish himself in senior football. However, Dorrington believes remaining within the English league pyramid is optimal for his development as a press-resistant, ball-playing defender.
The move to Poland was intended to provide a fresh challenge, with club-to-club negotiations already concluded. Dorrington was scheduled to finalise personal terms in Poland before the dramatic late twist saw him halt all proceedings. His representatives are now targeting Championship and League One clubs, seeking a destination closer to home.
Dorrington is a product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy at Hotspur Way, where he became a key figure for the club’s Under-21s and earned senior matchday inclusions. He holds an England youth international pedigree and has previously gained senior experience through loan spells at Aberdeen, where he won the Scottish Cup, and Salford City.
Tottenham’s recruitment team is now re-evaluating options for the defender following the collapse of the deal. With the Polish move off the table, discussions are accelerating with interested domestic clubs to secure a new challenge for the highly rated defender.
