DoorDash Air to begin in northern California with Chipotle and Popeyes
DoorDash says its six-propeller drone is built for small orders and that initial tests estimated average restaurant-to-door delivery times below five minutes.
DoorDash plans to start its DoorDash Air drone delivery programme in northern California, with Chipotle and Popeyes among its first restaurant partners, according to details reported by Engadget.
The six-propeller drone is designed for small, light orders. DoorDash said about 80 per cent of restaurant orders available through its platform are small and light enough for drone delivery.
The company said estimates from initial tests showed average delivery times from restaurant to customer’s door of under five minutes. The figure is an early estimate, not a stated service guarantee.
DoorDash’s delivery management system will consider ground traffic, weather and flight times when deciding which orders are suitable for air delivery.
The company has not provided a launch date, precise service area, regulatory details or expected delivery volumes.
