Dolphins secure Achane in $64m extension as Sullivan rebuilds roster
The Miami Dolphins have agreed to a four-year, $64 million contract extension for running back De'Von Achane, cementing his status as the league's third-highest-paid player at his position as the franchise undergoes a strategic overhaul.
The Miami Dolphins and running back De'Von Achane have finalised a four-year contract extension valued at $64 million, keeping the player with the franchise through the 2030 season. The agreement, which includes $32 million in guaranteed money and an average annual value of $16 million, establishes Achane as the third-highest-paid running back in the National Football League. Potential bonuses could elevate the total value of the deal to $68 million.
This extension marks the first major contract commitment under general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, who has described Achane as a "pillar" of the team's future construction. The move comes as the Dolphins execute a broader roster strategy to reduce costs and rejuvenate the squad, having traded or released several core stars during the offseason. Despite these changes, Sullivan confirmed that Achane was not available for trade prior to the draft, citing the priority of securing the running back's long-term commitment.
Achane enters the extension following a standout 2025 campaign where he rushed for a career-high 1,350 yards and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. Since entering the league in 2023, he has led all qualified running backs with an average of 5.6 yards per carry. He is also tied with Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor for the second-most rushes of at least 50 yards during that period, while adding 172 receptions and 13 receiving touchdowns to his statistical profile.
Head coach Jeff Hafley indicated that the Dolphins intend to prioritise an effective running game in 2026, a strategy reflected in the team's recent personnel decisions. Miami utilised a first-round draft pick on Alabama tackle Kadyn Proctor, who expressed enthusiasm about his role in supporting Achane's success. Proctor noted that blocking for a dynamic player like Achane simplifies the offensive line's task, allowing for sustained blocks and greater impact on the field.
The contract places Achane in the company of other high-value running back deals this offseason, including agreements with Travis Etienne Jr., Breece Hall, and Kenneth Walker III. With Achane secured, the Dolphins plan to direct their attention toward extending other key components of their roster, specifically centre Aaron Brewer and linebacker Jordyn Brooks.
