Dodgers secure Skubal in blind bid, outmaneuvering Brewers and Rays at deadline
Los Angeles leverages deep prospect capital to win exclusive negotiations, leaving Milwaukee and Tampa Bay without top-tier assets.
The Detroit Tigers have completed the trade of ace pitcher Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, a deal finalised at 11:31 p.m. ET on 7 August 2026. The acquisition follows a blind bidding process that saw the Dodgers secure the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner by offering right-hander River Ryan, outfielder Zyhir Hope, and right-hander Brady Smith. Skubal is scheduled to become a free agent following the 2026 season.
Detroit initiated final offers on Saturday afternoon to avoid a collapsing market or suitors pivoting to other targets. The Tigers moved ahead of the Monday 6 p.m. ET deadline, fearing that waiting would allow teams to secure pitchers with longer contract control, such as Seattle’s George Kirby. The decision to trade Skubal was driven by the need to salvage value after a difficult season, with the front office seeking a balanced return of major-league-ready talent and high-ceiling prospects.
The Milwaukee Brewers were the primary alternative suitor but were excluded from serious contention because they declined to include their top prospect, shortstop Jesús Made, or other key young players like Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara. The Tampa Bay Rays were similarly sidelined after refusing to include their top prospect, outfielder Theo Gillen. The New York Yankees were handicapped by their unwillingness to trade shortstop George Lombard Jr., while the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves lacked the specific prospect capital required to meet Detroit’s demands.
The deal was finalised after medical records were exchanged and cleared by team doctors, including Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache. The Dodgers’ package appealed to Detroit because it balanced immediate major-league-ready talent with high-upside prospects. River Ryan, a hard-throwing right-hander who has returned from Tommy John surgery, was viewed as the fulcrum of the deal due to his elite arsenal, despite injury concerns.
In the final minutes of the deadline, Detroit simultaneously traded rotation mate Casey Mize to the San Diego Padres for left-hander Kash Mayfield. The Brewers, having lost the bid for Skubal, pivoted to acquire right-hander Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the St Louis Cardinals. The trade underscores the financial disparity in the league, with the Dodgers utilising their abundant resources to operate in a value-negative space without severe consequences.
