Detroit Tigers place Riley Greene on injured list with hamstring strain
All-Star left fielder exits game against Cleveland Guardians; Corey Julks recalled from Triple-A Toledo to fill vacancy
The Detroit Tigers have placed All-Star left fielder Riley Greene on the 10-day injured list following a diagnosis of a right hamstring strain. The administrative move was confirmed on Wednesday, 12 August, effectively removing the team’s cornerstone outfielder from the active roster for the foreseeable future.
Greene exited the contest against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night during the bottom of the second inning. The injury occurred after he hit an RBI double for Spencer Torkelson and reported tightness while slowing down to touch home plate. Manager A.J. Hinch noted that Greene did not exhibit the typical physical signs of a severe strain, such as hobbling, which the club views as a positive indicator.
The decision to place Greene on the injured list followed a comprehensive medical evaluation. Hinch stated that the player received multiple professional opinions up until game time before the final determination was made. The Tigers prioritised a thorough assessment to ensure no pressure was placed on the injury, with Greene reporting the issue to trainers immediately upon feeling the tightness.
To accommodate the roster change, the Tigers have recalled outfielder Corey Julks from Triple-A Toledo. Julks, who signed a minor-league contract in January, has recorded a .273 batting average and an .800 on-base plus slugging percentage in 366 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He has previously played 165 Major League Baseball games for the Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox.
The roster shuffle also required the designation of right-handed pitcher Troy Watson for assignment and the optioning of right-handed pitcher Yilber Díaz to Triple-A. Conversely, left-handed pitcher Enmanuel De Jesus was activated from the paternity list. Hinch indicated that playing time in left field would be distributed among Ben Malgeri, James Outman, and Julks.
Greene has been a consistent presence for Detroit, appearing in 117 of the team’s 119 games this season. The 2025 Silver Slugger winner is currently hitting .273 with a .366 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage, contributing 16 home runs and 54 runs batted in.
The Tigers secured a 6-4 victory over the Guardians on Tuesday, with Malgeri starting in left field during Greene’s absence. This roster adjustment comes as the club navigates a busy stretch of the season, following a rain delay at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs on 20 July.
