Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has confirmed that ace pitcher Tarik Skubal will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. The decision to withdraw the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner from the rotation for the remainder of the campaign follows tests conducted after Skubal reported pain on Sunday.
Although Hinch characterised the operation as an "easy process," the procedure typically sidelines players for two to three months. Skubal, who was scheduled to start against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, opted for immediate surgery to facilitate a quicker return compared to waiting for the injury to resolve naturally.
The injury announcement comes after Hinch and a trainer visited the mound during Skubal's final start against the Atlanta Braves. Following a 2-2 pitch in the seventh inning, Skubal rubbed his left arm before throwing a single warmup pitch and striking out the side to end the game.
In response to the news, the Tigers have recalled right-hander Ty Madden. Additionally, left-hander Tyler Holton is set to serve as the opener for the next game after pitching two-thirds of an inning in Sunday's 7-1 victory against the Texas Rangers.
The absence of Skubal, who is currently 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA over seven starts this season, has immediate implications for the team's betting markets. Following the report, Skubal was removed from DraftKings' odds board entirely, with Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler becoming the new American League Cy Young favourite.
