Delaware voters cast ballots in final US primaries before midterms
Closed Democratic and Republican contests will determine nominees for Senate, House, state legislative and treasurer races ahead of the November 3 general election.
Delaware voters are taking part in the final scheduled US state primaries before the November 3 midterm elections, with closed Democratic and Republican contests under way for federal and state offices.
Only registered members of the relevant party can vote. Primaries are held where more than one candidate is seeking a party nomination, while unopposed candidates advance directly to the general election.
Democratic Senator Chris Coons faces Jeff Appelhans, Mary Louve and Eric Hansen in the contest for the party’s Senate nomination. Hansen, the Republican Senate nominee in 2024, is running as a Democrat under the ballot name “E. No-Trump Hansen”.
Michael Katz and John Shulli are competing for the Republican Senate nomination. Voters will also select nominees for state legislative seats and an open state treasurer position.
In the House contest, Democratic Representative Sarah McBride is unopposed as she seeks a second term as Delaware’s sole representative. Republicans Joseph Arminio, Earl Cooper and John Whalen are competing to challenge her in November.
Al Jazeera Global News reported that Delaware’s congressional seats are expected to remain Democratic, reflecting the state’s long-term political alignment. About 808,000 voters were registered as of September 1, including approximately 331,000 Democrats and 199,000 Republicans.
