De Zerbi rejects pressure over Tottenham’s summer spending
The Tottenham coach says the club’s transfer outlay was appropriate, while acknowledging the team must improve after taking one point from its opening three league matches.
Tottenham coach Roberto De Zerbi says the club’s summer transfer spending has not created pressure for him, arguing that other Premier League teams spent more.
Speaking in an interview reported by Yahoo Sports, De Zerbi said Tottenham’s spending reflected the demands of competing in the Premier League. He said he had no regrets about the club’s summer recruitment, which reportedly included Sandro Tonali.
De Zerbi said Tottenham’s owners and executives had established a clear plan and project for the club. He identified the Lewis family, the board, Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange as working effectively on that direction.
The coach acknowledged that Tottenham’s immediate performance required attention. The club were reportedly winless after three Premier League matches, with one point, and De Zerbi said the team needed to improve, secure results and play better.
His comments were released before Tottenham’s scheduled Premier League match against Everton. De Zerbi maintained that the spending itself was not a source of pressure.
