Dallas Wings rookie Azzi Fudd out for season with right knee injury

Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd will miss the remainder of the WNBA season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right knee. The team announced the procedure on Wednesday, confirming that the rookie has not played since 5 August due to ongoing soreness.

Fudd, selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, has a documented history of significant right knee injuries. During her high school career, she suffered ACL and MCL tears that required multiple surgeries. At the University of Connecticut, she tore her right ACL and meniscus, missing the majority of her junior season, and later missed several weeks as a senior due to a minor knee sprain.

In 30 games this season, Fudd averaged 13.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.7 steals. She also shot 39.7 per cent from three-point range. As of Wednesday, she leads the Wings in three-pointers and steals, and ranks fourth on the team in scoring.

The injury represents a significant setback for the Wings, who have recorded a 2-7 record since the All-Star break. The team currently sits in eighth place in the standings.

Despite the loss of their top prospect, the Wings hold a four-and-a-half-game lead over the ninth-place Portland Fire for the final playoff spot. While the team is positioned to secure a postseason berth, their prospects for a deep run are diminished without Fudd’s contributions.
