Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins has been fined 12 lakh rupees for a slow over rate during the team’s Indian Premier League 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans. The penalty, issued under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct for a first offence, follows a match where Gujarat Titans posted 168/5 and bowled out Hyderabad for 86 in 14.5 overs. The fine was confirmed by the IPL in an official statement after the team’s 82-run defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night.
The match saw Gujarat Titans move to the top of the IPL 2026 points table following a comprehensive victory. Chasing a target set by Hyderabad’s defeat, Gujarat posted a competitive total powered by Sai Sudharsan’s 61 and Washington Sundar’s half-century. In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s batting order collapsed under pressure, despite Jason Holder and Kagiso Rabada claiming three wickets each for the visiting side.
Cummins joins a growing list of IPL captains penalised for similar scheduling violations this season. According to data provided by the league, several other team leaders have faced fines for first-offence slow over rates, including Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings, Shubman Gill of Gujarat Titans, Ruturaj Gaikwad of Chennai Super Kings, Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians, Ajinkya Rahane of Kolkata Knight Riders, and Axar Patel of Delhi Capitals.
The pattern of infractions has seen some captains face escalating penalties. Shreyas Iyer received a second fine of 24 lakh rupees for a subsequent offence against Chennai Super Kings, while others have been fined the standard 12 lakh rupees for their initial breaches. This marks Sunrisers Hyderabad’s first slow over rate offence of the 2026 season.
The incident highlights the strict enforcement of over-rate regulations by the IPL governing council. Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct specifically pertains to minimum over-rate offences, with fines applied automatically when teams fail to maintain the required bowling pace. The financial penalty serves as a deterrent for captains responsible for managing their team’s time on the field effectively.
