Crystal Palace agree personal terms with Brest defender Raphael Le Guen

Crystal Palace have agreed personal terms with 19-year-old Brest defender Raphael Le Guen, according to reports from L’Equipe. The club is expected to submit a formal bid to the French side in the coming days to secure the services of the centre-back. The move is part of a broader restructuring at Selhurst Park, with Le Guen identified as a primary replacement for Maxence Lacroix, who is departing for a significant fee after two seasons.
Le Guen has made only six Ligue 1 appearances for Brest, yet his performance in those limited outings has convinced Palace’s hierarchy of his potential. In those matches, he recorded an 80 per cent win rate in aerial duels and a 54 per cent success rate in ground duels. Former Brest manager Eric Roy has endorsed the player’s capabilities, stating that Le Guen possesses great potential to work with.
The signing addresses an immediate defensive void left by Lacroix’s exit. Palace lost Marc Guehi in January and have yet to find a permanent replacement for that role. While Le Guen targets the vacancy created by Lacroix, the club remains interested in Chrislain Matsima, who is viewed as a candidate to fill the void left by Guehi. It remains unclear whether the acquisition of Le Guen will impact the pursuit of Matsima, though analysis suggests the two targets address different structural needs within the defence.
Beyond the back line, Crystal Palace face urgent requirements in midfield. The squad has been depleted by the long-term injury to Cheick Doucoure, who has been sidelined for an extended period, and the departure of Daichi Kamada. These losses have reduced the club’s options in the middle of the park, creating a gap in ball-winning capability and tactical balance.
Uncertainty surrounds the future of Adam Wharton, with several elite clubs monitoring the England international. Even if Wharton remains, the squad lacks the depth required to support manager Pierre Sage’s high-energy, transition-based system, which relies on athletic and technically secure midfielders to cover ground and control possession. Palace have previously targeted Youssouf Fofana and Mamadou Sangare as solutions to these midfield deficiencies. With the transfer window entering a crucial phase, the club is under pressure to finalise reinforcements to maintain competitiveness across multiple competitions.
