Cronin outlines protective strategy for Kusturica as UCLA targets top-20 debut

UCLA men’s basketball coach Mick Cronin has established a cautious developmental framework for incoming 17-year-old freshman Nikola Kusturica, emphasising the necessity of protecting the Serbian international from immediate media pressure. Cronin stated that the program will implement "baby steps" to allow the 6-foot-8 wing to navigate the inevitable fluctuations of collegiate performance without intense public scrutiny.

Kusturica, a potential No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft, arrives at UCLA following a dominant performance at the FIBA U17 World Cup, where he scored 37 points against Team USA in the championship game. Having committed to the Bruins over Michigan and Kentucky, he joins a roster that includes retained key players Xavier Booker and Trent Perry, positioning the team to open the season within the top 20 of the AP Top 25 poll.

Cronin highlighted Kusturica’s passing ability and court vision as his most significant on-court attributes, noting the forward’s capacity to facilitate plays from his height. The coach acknowledged the unique pressures facing high-profile recruits, stating, "I think I've got to protect him, though, because he's coming to a place where everybody wants your blood," and stressing the importance of allowing the player to "leave the guy alone" during his adjustment period.

The addition of Kusturica marks a significant shift in UCLA’s recruiting strategy, contrasting with a recent transfer portal campaign that included a failed attempt to secure Southern California native Tounde Yessfou, who ultimately committed to St. John's. By securing Kusturica, the programme has addressed a critical need for a superstar-caliber player, raising both the floor and ceiling of the roster ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Cronin’s approach to roster construction relies heavily on retention, a strategy he has maintained throughout his tenure. He noted that all five players who could have entered the transfer portal chose to stay, reinforcing his belief that stability is essential for building a competitive team. This retention effort, combined with the acquisition of Kusturica, aims to elevate UCLA to a "great team" status as they continue their transition into the Big Ten conference.

UCLA is currently projected to open the season at No. 17 in Gary Parrish’s Top 25 rankings, a notable improvement from being unranked prior to Kusturica’s commitment. The programme finished 13-7 in conference play during its first two seasons in the Big Ten, and the current roster composition suggests a stronger competitive position moving forward.

Kusturica is one of three notable freshmen, alongside Texas’ Marcus Spears Jr. and Duke’s Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, who are required to play at least two years of college basketball due to the NBA’s age requirement. His arrival provides UCLA with a long-term cornerstone player as the programme seeks to establish consistent excellence in its new conference alignment.
