Cricket league investigates viral cheating allegations in Saltburn victory
The governing body has confirmed receipt of a formal complaint regarding a Division 2 match between Saltburn and Norton, where a viral clip suggests an attempt to deceive the umpire.
The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has initiated a formal investigation into a Division 2 match between Saltburn and Norton following the circulation of a viral video alleging cheating. The footage, which has garnered more than three million views on X, appears to show a Saltburn fielder clicking his fingers as the ball passes batter Noman Shabir’s bat, immediately before Shabir is given out caught behind by wicketkeeper Josh Bowes.
The league confirmed on X that a formal complaint was received regarding alleged incidents in the Saturday game and stated that a full investigation is underway. In its statement, the organisation noted that no further comment would be issued until formal processes are complete. Saltburn won the match by 159 runs and currently leads Division 2 by 17 points.
The incident has drawn international attention, with media outlets in Australia and New Zealand reporting on the story. The video suggests the finger-clicking was an attempt to trick the umpire into believing the batter had edged the ball, although it remains unconfirmed whether the action was intentional or coincidental. The validity of the allegations is now subject to the league’s review.
Compounding the scrutiny, Rory Cotterill, who captained Middlesbrough second XI, alleged two further incidents of cheating by Saltburn in a previous match against his team. Saltburn defeated Middlesbrough second XI by 29 runs last month, a game in which Cotterill claims further misconduct occurred. These additional claims remain unverified as the league focuses on the primary complaint.
The investigation comes amidst discussion of Saltburn’s recent performance, particularly regarding Josh Bowes. The wicketkeeper recently took eight catches in Saltburn’s 22-run win over Shildon Railway, a feat exceeding the men’s Test record of seven catches by a keeper in an innings. Bowes leads the league standings with 31 catches, 10 more than any other player. Norton declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
