Cowherd projects Lions to reclaim NFC North crown in 2026
Colin Cowherd identifies the Detroit Lions as the division’s top team while highlighting the Chicago Bears’ resurgence under Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams.
Fox Sports commentator Colin Cowherd has predicted the Detroit Lions will secure the NFC North title in the 2026 NFL season, positioning the franchise as a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Speaking on The Herd, Cowherd outlined the Lions as the team to beat in the division, citing a combination of roster strength, strategic coaching changes, and significant investments along the offensive line.
Cowherd highlighted the hiring of Drew Petzing as the new offensive coordinator as a pivotal upgrade for Detroit. He argued that the Lions possess the best roster in the division, bolstered by a skill position group featuring Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta. The commentator emphasised that this talent is protected by a robust offensive line, anchored by Penei Sewell, who received a long-term contract extension two offseasons ago.
Further strengthening the front line, Detroit selected Clemson tackle Blake Miller with the 17th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Cowherd noted that Sewell remains one of the best tackles in football and that the addition of Miller addresses the remaining tackle position. With quarterback Jared Goff at the helm, Cowherd described the Lions as a top-three team in the NFL, pointing to their nine-win season last year as evidence of their ceiling despite a brutal schedule and significant injuries.
Beyond Detroit, Cowherd identified the Chicago Bears as the division runner-up, praising their playoff appearance under head coach Ben Johnson. He noted that the Bears made the postseason for the first time since 2020 and secured a playoff victory for the first time since 2010. Cowherd credited Johnson for creating a new culture and stabilising the franchise after a turbulent period.
The commentator expressed confidence in the development of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, predicting improved accuracy for the young signal-caller. He highlighted the Bears’ receiving corps, which includes Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, and tight end Colston Loveland, following the trade of D.J. Moore to the Buffalo Bills. Cowherd concluded that the Bears’ foundation is strong, stating, "Don't like it, I love it," regarding their trajectory into the 2026 campaign.
