Cowboys glad to welcome Von Miller's production and leadership to inexperience group of edge rushers
Veteran pass-rusher joins Dallas as NFL’s active sack leader, aiming to elevate defence under new coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms with Von Miller, adding the NFL’s active sack leader to a defensive line described as inexperienced. The 37-year-old edge rusher brings 138 1/2 career sacks accumulated over 203 games in 14 seasons, a production record that includes two Super Bowl victories with the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Rams.

Miller recorded nine sacks in 420 snaps for the Washington Commanders last season, a total that would have topped the Dallas unit which was previously ranked among the league’s worst. His arrival coincides with the implementation of a new defensive scheme under coordinator Christian Parker, with the organisation seeking to elevate a group that has struggled in recent years.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated that Miller’s role will be carefully managed to preserve his effectiveness. The plan involves utilising the veteran primarily as a pass rusher, with a snap count significantly lower than a full-game workload. Schottenheimer noted that Miller retains first-step quickness and a diverse array of counter moves, stating the team is not looking for him to play 60 plays a game.

The signing also aims to provide leadership within the locker room. Outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku, a second-round draft pick from Boston College who recorded two sacks as a rookie, described Miller as a Super Bowl MVP and All-Pro who brings significant knowledge. Ezeiruaku anticipates that Miller will offer mentorship similar to the guidance he received from Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware early in his career.

Miller has indicated his intention to replicate that supportive dynamic with Ezeiruaku. The rookie, who had nine tackles for loss in his first season, expressed that having a player of Miller’s stature view his potential as worthy of such mentorship carries substantial weight for the developing edge rusher.
