Coppa Italia final reshapes Serie A European qualification landscape
The 2025-26 Serie A champions seek a domestic double, while ninth-placed Lazio fight for their only route to European football.

Inter Milan are set to face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Wednesday, a fixture that carries significant structural implications for the broader Serie A landscape. As the confirmed 2025-26 Serie A champions, Inter aim to secure a domestic double, their first since 2010. For Lazio, currently ninth in the standings, the match represents the sole opportunity to qualify for the Europa League, as they have no mathematical chance of reaching the top six in the league table.
The outcome of the final will directly alter the European qualification pathways for other Serie A clubs. Italy has been awarded seven spots for the next season’s European competitions, comprising four Champions League places, two Europa League spots, and one Conference League position. Under standard distribution rules, the top four teams qualify for the Champions League, the next two for the Europa League, and the seventh-placed team for the Conference League.
Because Inter have already secured a Champions League berth, their victory in the Coppa Italia would displace the usual qualification order for the lower European tiers. If Inter win, the sixth-placed team in Serie A would secure a Europa League spot, while the seventh-placed team would gain entry to the Conference League. This scenario directly impacts Como, currently sixth, and Atalanta, currently seventh.
For Como, an Inter victory would guarantee a Europa League place while keeping them in contention for Champions League qualification. For Atalanta, an Inter win represents their only remaining path to European football next season. Conversely, Lazio’s ninth-place position means they cannot reach the top six through league performance, making the Coppa Italia their exclusive route to continental competition.
Maurizio Sarri, who is expected to leave his role as Lazio manager at the end of the season, has the chance to conclude his tenure with a trophy. Inter, meanwhile, look to cap a successful campaign one year after their Champions League final loss to PSG, which led to the departure of former manager Simone Inzaghi. CBS Sports has projected an Inter victory with a score of 2-1, citing their superior form this season.
