Bezos consortium advances talks for stake in Liverpool
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin join British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia in proposed investment

A consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia has advanced discussions to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, according to reports from BBC Sport. The group, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, is seeking to purchase approximately 30 per cent of the club.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns the club, confirmed last month that the consortium had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment. The confirmation follows a period of speculation regarding potential new capital inflows for the Anfield-based side, which FSG originally purchased in a £300 million deal in 2010.

Bhatia, the lead figure in the proposed deal, is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. He recently relinquished his stake in Queens Park Rangers after serving as a director and co-owner for 18 years. His departure from the Championship club precedes the current negotiations with Liverpool, marking a significant shift in his portfolio.

The involvement of Jeff Bezos adds considerable financial weight to the consortium. The 62-year-old founder of Amazon is reported by Forbes to be the fourth-richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $256 billion (£192 billion). His participation underscores the high-profile nature of the potential investment.

This proposed transaction would not be the first time FSG has introduced external investors into the club’s structure. The owners previously sold a minority stake to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity. However, the current talks remain at an early stage, with no final agreement reached and specific financial terms yet to be disclosed.
