Console placement turns on airflow and stability, not orientation
Engadget says current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles support either position, with clearance and a stable surface the key considerations.
Modern PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles are designed to sit vertically or horizontally, according to Engadget. The choice can come down to available space, but the position should leave the console’s air intakes and exhaust unobstructed.
Engadget advises against placing consoles in cramped cabinets, against walls or beneath other devices. Sony recommends keeping the PS5 at least four inches from walls, the publication reports.
Horizontal placement is generally more stable because it gives the console a lower centre of gravity. Vertical positioning can save space, but may make the system easier to knock over. Engadget says using the included stand can help with the PS5 and Series X.
The guidance also addresses disc use: disc-capable consoles are designed to read discs in either orientation. The main practical difference is remembering disc direction.
If a PS5 runs hot, Engadget advises switching it off before checking for blocked vents, dust, nearby heat sources and clutter. Its article does not indicate that vertical placement itself harms airflow or cooling; surrounding space is the key factor.
