Commanders overhaul secondary leadership ahead of 2026 campaign

Joe Whitt Jr. has departed the role of defensive coordinator, replaced by Daronte Jones, who arrives from the Minnesota Vikings where he served as secondary coach.
Jones has already begun outlining his expectations for the unit, specifically highlighting cornerbacks Mike Sainristil and safety Quan Martin as central figures in the team’s recovery. Both players experienced a decline in performance last season after showing promise in 2024, with Whitt Jr. previously expressing confidence that Martin could develop into one of the league’s premier safeties. The new coordinator’s endorsement of these players signals a continued institutional belief in their potential to bounce back.
The roster construction for the upcoming season emphasises a balance between established veterans and new acquisitions. Newcomers Amik Robertson and Nick Cross are projected to secure starting roles, with Robertson expected to take the slot cornerback position and Cross starting at safety. This influx of talent is designed to complement returning veterans such as Trey Amos and provide the necessary depth to address the unit's previous vulnerabilities.
Competition for roster spots remains intense, particularly in the safety group. While Cross, Martin, Harris, and Reaves are considered locks for the active roster, the final spots are subject to evaluation.
