Commanders defender Omenihu leads recruitment drive for Diggs and Sneed ahead of 2026 season

Charles Omenihu, a defender who joined the Washington Commanders in March, has initiated active recruitment efforts for two prominent free agents as the club prepares for the 2026 season. Both wide receiver Stefon Diggs and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed have recently received legal clearance, removing barriers that previously prevented them from signing new contracts. Omenihu has utilised social media platforms to share updates regarding their availability, aiming to assist the team in addressing specific roster needs at receiver and cornerback.

The outreach specifically targets Diggs following his clearance of all charges related to an alleged incident involving his former personal chef. In his own communications, Diggs highlighted his production numbers, noting he played 52 per cent of snaps and recorded 85 catches for 1,045 yards following an ACL injury. Omenihu cited these statistics during his recruitment, emphasising the veteran's output as a key factor for the Commanders who have sought assistance at the receiver position throughout the offseason.

While the Commanders have previously pursued Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs, retaining Dyami Brown, and adding Van Jefferson and Antonio Williams, the team continues to seek depth. Omenihu's recruitment of Diggs contrasts with the uncertainty surrounding Brandon Aiyuk's future with the San Francisco 49ers. Unlike the potential waiting period associated with Aiyuk's contract status, Diggs and Sneed are viewed as viable candidates for one-year deals that could immediately fill the identified gaps in Washington's roster.

L'Jarius Sneed, a cornerback who previously played with Omenihu on the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, also cleared the path for a new contract this week. Sneed was released by the Tennessee Titans after two seasons, during which he played only 12 games due to injuries. Omenihu shared news of Sneed's legal clearance and free agency status on his social media channels, noting that the Commanders still require significant help at the cornerback position to maintain defensive stability.

Both players are considered potential one-year signings to address Washington's immediate requirements without the delay of waiting for other free agent decisions. Omenihu, who signed a one-year deal with the Commanders in March 2025, has leveraged his personal connections and mutual respect with these veterans to facilitate the process. This initiative represents a proactive approach by a player to assist the organisation in its personnel strategy ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Despite the active outreach, no official contract offers or agreements have been confirmed at this stage. The recruitment remains in the active phase, with final outcomes dependent on the willingness of the free agents to sign and the Commanders' final roster decisions.
