Colts’ faith in Jaylahn Tuimoloau faces pass-rush test
Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard has praised the defensive end’s progress and special-teams work, but his preseason pass-rush output remains limited.
The Indianapolis Colts are hoping Jaylahn Tuimoloau can strengthen their defensive-end rotation in his second NFL season, but the former second-round pick has yet to provide clear evidence of a pass-rush breakthrough.
Tuimoloau, selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, played just over 200 defensive snaps as a rookie. The Colts are now considering whether he can contribute a larger role alongside Laiatu Latu.
General manager Chris Ballard told Yahoo Sports that Tuimoloau was making “really good progress”, with positive performances in training and preseason games. Ballard also pointed to his work across the special-teams units.
That contribution included the first two tackles on a kickoff against Detroit, according to Ballard. He said the defensive end had also done “some really good things” against New England and Atlanta, while acknowledging that special-teams production did not directly demonstrate his pass-rushing ability.
Across 59 preseason pass-rush snaps, Tuimoloau recorded two quarterback pressures, with no sacks or quarterback hits. Those figures leave the Colts’ expectations for his regular-season impact unresolved.
The question for Indianapolis is whether Tuimoloau can translate the progress identified by Ballard into a meaningful boost for a defensive line still seeking pass-rush production at defensive end.
