Colts’ Buckner targets Week 1 return after neck surgery
Three-time Pro Bowler DeForest Buckner has outlined his recovery timeline following a herniated disc injury sustained during the 2025 season, with the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive line looking to him as a cornerstone upon his return.

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner has provided a status update on his recovery from a neck injury sustained in 2025, stating his objective is to be fully healthy for the start of the 2026 regular season. The veteran player underwent surgery in early January following a herniated disc injury that resulted in his placement on injured reserve.
Buckner sustained the injury during Week 9 of the 2025 regular season. Although he returned to play in Week 16, he was subsequently placed on injured reserve. The subsequent surgical intervention in early January marked the next phase of his rehabilitation, with the player now targeting a return to action during training camp.
Speaking to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan prior to minicamp, Buckner addressed the psychological toll of the injury, noting that he initially experienced "deep, dark thoughts" regarding his future in the sport. He stated that he has since reached a "good space" mentally and is committed to doing whatever is necessary to return to the field for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
The Colts’ defensive line will look to Buckner to anchor their front seven upon his return. Originally acquired from the San Francisco 49ers following the 2019 campaign, the three-time Pro Bowler has recorded 389 tackles, 43 sacks, and six forced fumbles over 88 games with Indianapolis. His presence has been described as an essential component of the defensive line when healthy over the past six seasons.
While Buckner missed time in 2024 due to an ankle injury, the current focus remains on the 2025 neck injury. His medical status will be further clarified throughout training camp this summer, with the team monitoring his progress as he seeks to bounce back for the 2026 campaign.
