Colts and Falcons miss key new signings in first joint practice

Keenan Allen, who signed a one-year contract with the Colts less than 48 hours prior, was present at the facility but did not participate in on-field drills. The 34-year-old wide receiver flew into Indianapolis on Tuesday night and spent the early part of Wednesday reuniting with head coach Shane Steichen. Allen observed the session from the sideline, a role that mirrors the experience of the spectators in the stands as he acclimates to his new environment.

Allen’s decision to join the Colts was driven by his familiarity with the offensive system and the opportunity to contribute immediately. He noted that his knowledge of the playbook allows him to be ready to perform right away, fostering a dynamic where players can feed off each other’s energy. This reunion with Steichen, who served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Chargers during Allen’s first seven seasons, underscores the strategic continuity the Colts are seeking.

The Colts are looking to Allen to provide the production and consistency he has demonstrated throughout his 13 NFL seasons. As the career leader in receptions for the Los Angeles Chargers with 985 catches, Allen brings a proven track record of professionalism. Steichen praised Allen’s career-long consistency, stating that adding a player of that calibre is beneficial for the entire team. This signing addresses receiver depth concerns following the departure of Michael Pittman Jr. and an injury to Alec Pierce.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons were also missing their new edge rusher, Za'Darius Smith. The 33-year-old defender signed a one-year deal on Tuesday, reuniting him with head coach Kevin Stefanski, with whom he worked in Cleveland in 2023 and 2024. However, Smith had not yet arrived in the area for the first joint practice. Stefanski had no scheduled media availability on Wednesday, leaving it unclear whether Smith would participate in the subsequent session on Thursday.

The Falcons’ interest in Smith is part of a broader effort to offset significant losses on the defensive line. The team is navigating the season-ending knee injury of linebacker Jalon Walker and the eight-game suspension of edge rusher James Pearce Jr., who was penalised for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. With the two teams scheduled to face off in a preseason game on Saturday, the integration of these new players will be a key focus for both coaching staffs.
