Colorado lineman Gooden makes two-way impact in season-opening win
Chauncey Gooden played 65 offensive snaps and seven defensive snaps as Colorado defeated Georgia Tech 14–13.
Colorado sophomore interior lineman Chauncey Gooden played on both sides of the ball in the Buffaloes’ 14–13 season-opening win over Georgia Tech, taking on a specialised defensive role alongside his duties at left guard.
Gooden, listed at 380 pounds, played 65 offensive snaps and seven defensive snaps. He entered on defence in goal-line and short-yardage situations, using his size to help strengthen the middle of the formation.
Fox Sports reported that Gooden’s expanded role followed his development on the offensive line, where his primary responsibility was protecting quarterback Julian Lewis. Coach Deion Sanders has used two-way players at Colorado previously, including Travis Hunter, Isaiah Hardge and Tyler Brown.
Gooden was named the Outland Trophy national player of the week for his performance at the line of scrimmage. The award recognises his contribution in a game where Colorado secured its first win of the season.
Colorado is scheduled to host Weber State in its next game.
