The Kentucky Derby, held annually at Churchill Downs in Louisville, stands as the nation's longest-running continuously held sporting event, celebrating 152 years of history. Originally a local gathering popularised in the early 20th century by Matt Winn, former vice president and general manager of Churchill Downs, the race has evolved into a global spectacle defined by elaborate fashion and significant celebrity attendance.
Historic milestones have cemented the event's place in American culture, including Regret becoming the first filly to win in 1915 and Sir Barton achieving the first Triple Crown in 1919. While the official Triple Crown designation did not exist until the 1930s, Sir Barton's victory remains a defining moment, followed decades later by Secretariat, whose record time of 1:59 2/5 remains the standard for the most popular winner.
The race has also turned several trainers, owners, and jockeys into household names, with Calumet Farm holding the record for most wins with eight.
