China becomes Rwanda’s leading export market, but standards remain a hurdle
China took 26 per cent of Rwanda’s exports in the first quarter of 2026 after tariffs were removed on almost all Rwandan products.

China became Rwanda’s largest export market in the first quarter of 2026, accounting for 26 per cent of the country’s exports, according to a France 24 report.
The figure was below 5 per cent a year earlier, marking a sharp change in the destination of Rwanda’s goods. The shift followed China’s removal of tariffs on almost all Rwandan products.
The change has lowered a key cost barrier for Rwandan exporters seeking access to China’s market of 1.4 billion consumers. But tariff access has not resolved the practical requirements for expanding trade.
Meeting Chinese sanitary standards remains a significant challenge, particularly for exporters seeking to place agricultural products in the market. Compliance may therefore determine whether the increase can be sustained.
The available report does not specify which products drove the rise in exports or which products may remain outside the tariff changes. China’s position as Rwanda’s leading export market applies to the first quarter of 2026.
