Chiefs offensive coordinator returns following family tragedy
Kansas City Chiefs restore their offensive leadership after the shooting incident involving Bieniemy’s wife, while legal proceedings against their son continue.
Eric Bieniemy has returned to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, concluding a two-week absence triggered by a violent incident at his family home in Virginia. The offensive coordinator missed 11 team practices while travelling to be with his wife, Mia, who was hospitalised with serious injuries following a shooting.
The incident occurred at the family residence in Loudoun County, where their son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, allegedly fired the shots. Mia Bieniemy, 57, was admitted to hospital on July 26. According to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, she was released from the intensive care unit a few days later and has remained in stable condition.
Loudoun County authorities confirmed that a woman was treated for multiple gunshot wounds but initially withheld her identity. Police later arrested Elijah Bieniemy, charging him with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bond at a local detention centre.
While Eric Bieniemy was away, pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier assumed the duties of offensive coordinator. The team’s leadership has maintained a focus on stability during this period, with Reid noting that the family is heading in the right direction regarding Mia’s recovery.
Reid stated that Bieniemy was eager to resume his duties, adding that Mia was likely also wanting him back at work. Sources told ESPN that Mia Bieniemy was shot in the chest and arm, though specific details regarding the long-term prognosis remain unclear as the legal process against Elijah Bieniemy proceeds.
