Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has returned to training camp following a two-week absence, marking the end of a period defined by a severe domestic incident at his family home in Ashburn, Virginia. The departure from team activities began on July 26, when Bieniemy left immediately to be with his wife, Mia, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident.
Mia Bieniemy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed on July 29 that she was in stable condition. The legal proceedings surrounding the event have progressed with the arrest of their son, Elijah Bieniemy, who has been charged with three felonies: malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He remains held without bond at a local detention centre.
During his absence, which saw Bieniemy miss 11 team practices, he maintained a operational presence with the squad. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes reported that the coordinator remained in contact via Zoom and live-streamed practices, continuing to discuss plays and provide input throughout the day. Mahomes noted that Bieniemy, known for his vocal leadership, remained engaged with the team's strategic preparations despite the personal circumstances.
Mahomes, who is currently recovering from a torn ACL sustained in December and aiming for a Week 1 return, spoke to reporters on Saturday, 8 August, regarding Bieniemy’s status. He confirmed that Mia Bieniemy was "doing better now" and expressed relief at the positive updates from the coordinator. The quarterback emphasised that while the team is eager for Bieniemy’s return, they also respect the need for him to prioritise his family during this critical recovery period.
Upon his return to practice on Monday, Bieniemy told fans, as reported by The Athletic, that "it's great to be back." Mahomes described the coordinator as the "most excited guy on the football field" upon his return, acknowledging the support the players have shown while balancing their enthusiasm for his return with sensitivity to the family's situation.
