Chelsea secure Lacroix as Palace pivot to defensive rebuild

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Crystal Palace for the transfer of French international defender Maxence Lacroix, with the player granted permission to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge. The final fee remains undisclosed, although reports indicate Crystal Palace sought approximately £55 million for the 26-year-old.

Lacroix joined Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 for a reported £18 million and has established himself as a key figure in the squad. In his debut season, he helped the club secure the FA Cup, the Community Shield, and the Europa Conference League, marking the first major trophies in the club’s history. On the international stage, he contributed to France’s run to the World Cup semi-finals this summer and has earned seven senior caps since his debut earlier this year.

While Sky Sports reported that Chelsea offered Palace the option to include Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, or former loanee Trevoh Chalobah in the transfer package, Palace have reportedly declined these assets. Instead, the South London club is focusing on acquiring new defensive talent to replace two key figures in successive transfer windows.

The departure follows the sale of Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January. Palace are now actively seeking replacements, with Chrislain Matsima from Augsburg, Ruben Kluivert from Lyon, and Charlie Cresswell from Toulouse identified as primary targets. Negotiations for Matsima have reportedly stalled, with no breakthrough achieved to date.

This transfer occurs against a backdrop of significant change at both clubs. Chelsea recently appointed Xabi Alonso as manager on a four-year contract, effective 1 July, replacing interim boss Calum McFarlane. Meanwhile, Palace’s search for defensive reinforcements continues as they look to stabilise their backline following the loss of their previous defensive leaders.
