Chelsea secure British record £117m transfer for Morgan Rogers
The 23-year-old midfielder, who won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, signs a six-year deal following Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph.

Chelsea have agreed a British record transfer fee of £117 million to sign England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The deal, which exceeds the £107 million previously paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023, represents a significant financial commitment from the West London club. Rogers, 23, is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before finalising a six-year contract with an option for a further year.
The transaction was negotiated directly by Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali with Aston Villa’s owner, according to reporting by The Telegraph. This direct involvement underscores the strategic importance of the acquisition for the club’s ownership group. Manager Xabi Alonso, whose appointment was confirmed on Sunday morning on a four-year contract commencing 1 July, outlined his vision for the player as a key factor in the agreement.
Rogers’ decision to join Chelsea was also influenced by his close relationship with Cole Palmer. The midfielder arrives after a standout 2024/25 season in which he won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award. He played a pivotal role in helping Aston Villa secure Champions League qualification and win the UEFA Europa League last season, making 125 appearances across all competitions with 31 goals and 29 assists.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Rogers predates this summer, having targeted him last season before ultimately signing Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. Both Garnacho and Jamie Gittens, signed from Borussia Dortmund, struggled during the previous campaign, prompting Chelsea to reignite their interest in Rogers. Arsenal were previously considered favourites for the signing before Chelsea intervened with their substantial offer.
Middlesbrough are set to receive £15 million from a sell-on clause attached to Rogers’ original transfer from Villa in February 2024. The acquisition follows Chelsea’s defeat in the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday and serves as a statement of intent from the club’s new leadership structure under Alonso and Eghbali.
