Chelsea rebuild enters defining season under Sonia Bompastor

Chelsea Women are entering a period of transition under Sonia Bompastor after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign exposed the difficulty of sustaining the club’s long-running dominance. Chelsea finished third in the Women’s Super League and won only the League Cup, ending a six-year run as league champions.

Bompastor, who replaced Emma Hayes and led Chelsea to an unbeaten domestic treble in her first season, said the club’s hierarchy had given her backing and time to rebuild. She also acknowledged that results would determine how long that support lasts as Chelsea seek to restore their domestic standing.

The squad has changed significantly. Former captain Millie Bright has retired, while Sam Kerr, Niamh Charles, Guro Reiten and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd have reportedly departed. Bompastor said replacing their experience and influence would require attention to recruitment, team culture and the standards expected on and off the pitch.

Chelsea have made four summer signings, including experienced defender Katie McCabe and 18-year-old prospect Nelly Las. The recruitment strategy is intended to combine experience, youth and positional versatility, with Bompastor emphasising the need to develop younger players alongside established leaders.

Ellie Carpenter is among the senior players expected to help carry the club’s legacy into its next phase. She said departing players had left a significant legacy and that the current squad’s responsibility was to build on it while competing for trophies.

The Champions League remains Chelsea’s major unresolved ambition. Bompastor and Carpenter identified the competition as a central target, while recognising that European competition is becoming more difficult and that the club has never won the trophy. The comments were made to Sky Sports ahead of the new season, with the final squad and results still to be determined.
