Chelsea in talks to sign Atalanta defender Ahanor
Football Transfers

Chelsea are in advanced discussions to sign 18-year-old Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor for a fee of £34.3m, according to BBC Sport. The move represents a significant investment in youth as manager Xabi Alonso continues to reshape the squad following his appointment in July.

Atalanta are reportedly willing to release the left-back if Chelsea meet their valuation of 40m euros. This threshold exceeds the 34m euros (£29m) bid previously rejected by the Serie A club from Brighton earlier this summer, suggesting a competitive environment for the young defender.

Ahanor joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer on a three-year deal for a reported 16m euros, plus 4m euros in add-ons. He has established himself as a regular starter, making 28 appearances in Serie A last season and debuting in the Champions League in a 2-1 victory over Club Brugge in September.

The defender’s international profile has grown, with a call-up to the Italy squad in May for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece. Chelsea’s interest was initially signalled when they signed right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta in July, indicating a broader strategic interest in the club’s defensive resources.

The signing would complement recent additions to Alonso’s roster, which includes England midfielder Morgan Rogers, acquired from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m, alongside experienced Premier League veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea prepare to host Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday, following a 3-2 victory over Fulham in their opening match of the season on Monday.
